Job Title: Service Maintenance Supervisor – Asphalt
Department: Engineering / Public Works – Streets & Drainage

Reports to: Streets and Drainage Supervisor

Job Summary

Supervising operations of the asphalt crew of the Streets and Drainage Division to provide maintenance and construction of streets/ roadways of the City. Directs crews so that jobs and daily tasks are followed and completed properly in accordance with Superintendent’s instructions. Ensures proper tools and equipment are available each day and that trucks and equipment are loaded/unloaded and maintained properly. Ensures that crew follows proper safety guidelines to include proper placement and use of traffic control devices. Operates equipment as needed to fill-in for absent employees or vacant positions. Maintains records such as daily activity reports for work crews. Performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

  • Hands on supervision of crews to include placing asphalt patches, ensuring proper compaction/fill materials in potholes, hauling materials, etc.
  • Supervision in positioning traffic control devices around work zone to conform with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, hand signals, and two-way radios.
  • Oversees obtaining the necessary tools and equipment for job and loading onto truck.
  • Ensures tools are in good condition and in proper working order, oversees the cleaning of tools and equipment and ensures that tools and equipment are stored properly.
  • Attends departmental and safety meetings as required.
  • Maintains uniforms and safety attire to conform to proper dress codes and safety rules at all times.
  • Performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.
  • Be willing to work non-duty hours, holidays, and weekends when necessary to achieve goals.
  • Required on call rotation with other supervisory positions

Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent training and experience

Experience
Minimum of 5 years experience in a related field with some supervisory experience

Licenses or Certifications Required
Valid driver’s license

  • Organizational and operational procedures of streets and drainage division.
  • Proper operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Public Works safety rules and procedures.
  • Policies, rules and regulations of the City of Phenix City.

  • Comprehend written directives, policies, and rules.
  • Writing skills to assist in completing daily reports.
  • Communicate in order to converse with supervisors and co-workers regarding work related activities.
  • Count, add and subtract whole numbers.
  • Comprehend oral instructions.
  • Operate two-way radio to communicate with other work crews or dispatcher to receive and transmit information.
  • Follow instructions and efficiently complete tasks.
  • Exercise judgment particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others.
  • Work under immediate supervision and carry out assigned tasks.
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Be available to report to any Public Works related calls while active in the on call rotation
